Emotional Freedom Technique, EFT or Tapping. A simple yet powerful tool that can be used for a multiple array of topics, issues, emotions, feelings, and thoughts. Ever been taught to use something, like a tool, to later forget about it or how it’s used? Tapping is simple and easy to use once you learn it. The more you use it in your day to day lives you’ll be wondering how and why more people don’t use this life changing technique. Amazing benefits can be achieved by tapping using EFT.
What is tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique)
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) or Tapping, is a type of psychological acupressure in which the person using this technique uses their fingers to gently tap in different areas of their upper body to release stress, fears, negative thoughts, and limiting beliefs just to name a few of the many topics, circumstances and issues that a person can use tapping for. You can think of EFT as acupuncture without the needles. While tapping in the different zones, there are energy meridians that exist within the body that allow any blocked energy to begin moving which facilitates the process of releasing trapped emotions.
We all have had emotions and thoughts that dig deep into our mind, body, & spirit. By taking the time to acknowledge these challenges we create space for growth, being able to release what no longer serves our higher purpose. As we become encouraged to work through the tapping process, we learn how our body is letting us become aware of what is happening deep within!
When, Where and How can I tap?
Tapping is a very simple and powerful tool that can be used literally EVERYWHERE! You may be wondering what tools you need to be able to do this right? Tapping is done by gently tapping on the different points using the tips of your fingers. That simple! Anytime that you are feeling anxious, stressed, having feelings of disbelief or experiencing moments of self-doubt is a perfect time for tapping. There is really no specific time or place for tapping. If you feel that you are in need of self-assurance this is an exceptional tool that can be used to alleviate stress, and/or feelings of insecurity.
There are a total of eight different tapping points located on the upper part of the body. The first tapping point is called the Karate Chop, which is located on the sides of the hands. The other tapping points are located on the head, face and upper body.
How does tapping help me connect with my inner voice?
Tapping helps us acknowledge deep rooted beliefs that we have about any given situation. The actual process of gently tapping on our bodies gives us a type of acknowledgement. I benefited from EFT personally during a time when I had some self limiting beliefs with money. I was physically experiencing lower back pain, associated with my root chakra which has to do with security, abundance, and stability in life. This includes our basic needs such as food, water, shelter, safety, as well as our emotional needs of feeling connected, and being fearless. I was guided into my tapping session by a wonderful Life Coach that lives across the globe, our session happened virtually and not in person. I went into the experience leaving behind expectations as I was really doing this as a last resort for my lower back pain before having to resort back to my usual stretches and pain medications. As soon as we did the first round of tapping there was this surge of energy that happened within me. It felt like a wave of renewed energy had just created a spark and I could feel it’s warmth flowing through my body. At first I attributed this to Reiki (a Japanese healing modality) because I am a Master Reiki Practitioner. Therefore I thought that it was that precise energy flow that I had felt. We did a total of three tapping rounds, each time assessing my Subjective Units of Distress Scale (SUDS), which I will discuss in more detail below. The only request I had from my Coach at the end of our session was to continue tapping for the rest of day and possibly the following day. I continued tapping for an entire 7 seven days. By the third day, before getting out of bed I realized that my lower back pain had diminished so much that I didn’t have the need to stretch before getting out of bed. Since that moment I believed in the power of tapping. If I didn’t believe in it, or felt passionate about it, I wouldn’t be sharing this with you.
So... What do you want to Tap about?
Figuring out what to tap about…. “I don’t know” is a very usual response, and it’s ok if you don’t know what you want to tap about. This is the part where I come in and guide you through a series of questions that will help you figure out “why” you don’t know or what blocks may be presenting themselves that are preventing you from knowing. Tapping facilitates breaking our own barriers by knowing what we want, understanding how we feel, deciphering our thoughts, believing in ourselves, and very importantly, when to act and do things. I don’t know, is considered as a self-limiting belief that in order to be able to dig deeper to find out why this belief is in place we would want to reflect on questions like:
What are your feelings regarding money? Relationships? Your self?
What do you believe is true about yourself? About the world? Others in your life?
As we tap about these or other questions, there may be other emotions that arise, making these the “layers” that need to be worked on.
